We did it! We went a whole month being 100% vegetarian, and I must say, it was easier than I thought. Our diet wasn’t exactly paleo to begin with, but my husband and I were both brought up eating from a classic English “meat-and-two-veg” menu. There are some fantastic plant-based meat substitutes on the market which made the change super easy, and we are keen to keep some of the swaps!
Cauldron Lincolnshire Meat-Free Sausages are by far our favourite swap, and we intend to keep eating these instead of a traditional pork sausage! They taste great and don’t give you that hot meat-sweat at the end of a big meal. We used them in several recipes, cooked them in different ways and they passed the taste test every time. Readily available in all of the major supermarkets for around £2.00, why not give them a try?

Naked Glory Meat-Free Burgers & Mince were also tasty and provided a lighter alternative to beef. We used the mince to make chilli con carne and lasagne, both of which turned out great. My husband said he actually preferred the Naked Glory Mince to beef mince, so again it’s a swap to stick to.
Although we are not going to remain vegetarians going forward, we are going to continue eating a more plant-based diet, eating meat only 2-3 days a week. We are also committed to eating unprocessed and high welfare meats when we do have them. It may cost a few pounds more each week, but it’s worth it to know that we’re not supporting unsustainable and cruel animal farming.
Meat-Free May was an enlightening experience and one we may repeat next year. I urge you to give going meat-free a go, even if just for a week. You’ll be surprised by what you don’t miss, and who knows, you might even enjoy it!
Will you try going meat-free? If you already are, what is your favourite meat-free meal? Let us know in the comments!
